I heard about an article where people at flea market were selling all sorts of cd's and they had an error. The company put errors in the disc and when the people tried to get warranty from company they located the source of the free cd's. The Post Office was told to throw away the disc's that weren't deliverable. One or more employees decided one man's trash is another man's treasure. So, yes, I have at least heard about companies that make defects on disc's for a reason.

I haven't bought any music CDs in a long time. I don't even have a CD player handy. I buy music that I can download and put on USB media or stream. I wouldn't consider buying a CD that I couldn't copy the music from, because it would be useless to me. I do own a lot of CDs, and I've ripped the ones I care about to files and have them available. I believe that if I bought the music, I am free to listen to it on whatever device I choose. Copy protection just makes me look elsewhere.

I haven’t checked rip cd but when i get to that point i will. I am elderly (don’t cry for me I don’t need it). I my lifetime I have seen media fortunes shift from albums back again. What people throw away today could wind up gold with time. But what I don’t understand is how can they change a code and stop a machine from copying. This is pretty good mojo. You have to admit.

If you're just trying to copy the songs from an audio CD, that won't work. You need ripping software. There are several available, depending on what distro and DE you're using, both command line and GUI. I would suggest one of the GUI packages. Your software manager should find some for you, whatever it is.

And being elderly has nothing to do with anything. I'm probably older than you are, but it's immaterial.

Well I was talking about people's personal collections, not the sort of shadiness you seem to be suggesting.
