What options did you use for the cflags and what kernel do you got in there?

CHOST='i686-pc-linux-gnu'
CFLAGS='-march=athlon-xp -mcpu=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe'
CXXFLAGS='-march=athlon-xp -mcpu=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe'

I upgarded to 2.4.20 from 2.4.19
didnt make much difference

Looks good to me.All I can think of is trying the gentoo sources for the kernel or try to check with gtop or someting like that what is consuming that much of your CPU.Didn't have a problem like that with gentoo so far.
Do you use ext3? I heard something about a bug in the 2.4.20 kernel and ext3.Don't know much about it because I don't have a problem there.

No - don't worry about it.The bug was only about ext3.
