Angry netcat acting as server ?

i'm just playing around with netcat and i tried to make it to listen to specified port (nc -l 12000)... and it doesn't seem to work... what the hell!!!

Code:
miko@miko:~$ nc -l 12000 &
[1] 7940
miko@miko:~$ nc localhost 12000
localhost [127.0.0.1] 12000 (?) : Connection refused
and ideas?? it's really important for me...
