Why not just use native Linux apps? For Nero, you can use NeroLinux (you have to pay for it), K3b and gnomebaker. As for powerdvd, you can use xine based apps like Xine itself, Kaffeine and Totem. You can also use VLC and Mplayer.

For DVD menus, I think Xine based players are better than MPlayer although MPlayer does support them. I personally don't see what Powerdvd can do, that can't be done by native Linux players. What you may need to do is install libdvdcss2 if you want to play encrypted dvds.

Since when has MPlayer supported DVD menus?

AFAIK MPlayer does not support DVD menus, and is not really a serious option for DVD playing. There are a number of Xine-base media players that will play DVDs, but I've yet to find one with as good an interface as VLC.

A Linux version of PowerDVD was developed at one time and was bundled with a few distros, but I haven't heard anything about it for a long time. As far as I know it was never made available as a separate product.

I thought MPlayer had limited support for DVD menus. Anyway thanks for the correction.

Indeed vlc seems to be first choice for dvd watching atm, although I like the kaffeine interface better, but kaffeine/xine has had issues for me with some commercial dvd's and those nasty copy protections.
vlc played them all.

Do you have libdvdcss2 installed? Kaffeine and totem-xine work perfectly for me with any dvds.

yes, I have it installed. I have checked again now with the troy dvd, it won't play on xine-based players and ogle, but will play in vlc and mplayer. I have also tried an unencrypted copy (ripped with dvdfab) and the copy won't play as well in xine and ogle.

Either it's some other protection or I have overseen something in xine (or the installation). The error I get is (translated):

The source cannot be played
Either you don't have the permission or the source contains no data (Error reading NAV packet).

It's the same message which you see with missing libdvdcss, but the encryption can't be the problem here.
