Need to delete directories with files using command line FTP

I need to be able to delete a directory on my Linux server using the (apologies!) Windows XP command line FTP. When doing "rmdir directoryname" under the FTP utility, I receive "550 Directory not empty.". Fair enough, as the directory does indeed have files in it. I need an equivalent to a shell "rm -rf directoryname" under FTP. I guess this is something simple, but I've Googled and can't quite find the answer. Can anyone help?

delete is the FTP command to delete files. I don't know if delete supports masks or not. Do a Google search on "FTP delete mask" and see if you get any hits. If not, search on "FTP delete" and see if you can find out which parameters delete accepts.

why not write it in perl and ftp using Net::FTP - this may make it easier to delete the folder.
