need help

UBUNTU will not load into compaq presario 3+ GHz machine side by side with windows XP. UBUNTU home screen comes on for about three seconds then the compaq screen returns and the machine freezes. What am I doing wrong?

Did you hit enter at the Ubuntu boot screen?

Hope I'm launching a discussion here. I had a problem that resembles that one on a Fujitsu laptop were I could not any 2.6.15 and above kernel, the system freezes after it has decompressed the intrude. I tried Fedora Core 4, Suse 9 and Debian the only kernel I could load was Knoppix one.
Sorry if I'm not helping, just stating what happened to me.
