I am trying to set up mythtv in debian with a PVR-150MCE. I have the ivtv modules set up and loaded. The mysql database is setup. I ran mythtv-setup already. When I try to run mythbackend I get this:

Always authorization failed. I can log into mysql with the mythtv user and password fine. The card works in windows. Any help would be appreciated (or suggestions for another pvr).
OK, got mythbackend working now (sort of) but mythfilldatabase still gives lots of unauthorized errors and when I go to watch tv in the frontend there is just a black screen.
the terminal running backend gives lots of this:

What was wrong with it and how did you fix it? What does "sort of" mean? Details here might supply clues for further troubleshooting.

That's an error coming from the zap2it website. I would hazard a guess that either (1) your login/password is incorrectly entered, or (2) something got screwed up when you initially setup the account using Myth's certificate code. Can you login to the zap2it website manually and set up your profile? Have you contacted zap2it? Have you tried simply setting up another account from scratch?

I don't know what this specific error you're getting means, but it sure doesn't sound like one would expect things to work after receiving it:
Code:
Couldn't read file: rbuf://127.0.0.1:6543/home/stephen/mythtv/cache/ringbuf2.nuv2006-01-17 19:05:39.437
LiveTV not successfully started
Do you have sufficient free disk space under /home/stephen/mythtv/cache?
Short of these generic suggestions, posting your questions on the MythTV users (or developers) mailing list might turn up some clues. Try on the users list first. It sounds like you've got multiple different problems. This is not necessarily unusual. MythTV is one of the more complex apps you will likely install on Linux. Also probably one of the apps that will teach you the most about debugging, troubleshooting, and effectively searching out help.

Maybe the problem is that I can't get the listings from the zap2it website. I don't know what you mean by "setup the account using Myth's certification code". The installation manual says nothing about that. I just set up an account by going to the website and putting in a username and password that matches what I have put in mythtv-setup screen. Also tried creating a new one which didn't work either. I can get the listing fine by logging into the website with my username and password.

Yeah, doesn't sound good to me either but I have no idea what it means. I have plenty of disk space.
Awesome, that did it. Downloaded the listings. I can now browse the listings and schedule programs to be recorded. Still get a black screen when I go to watch tv. I'll work on it some more and figure it out. I know the card works cause I can change channels with ivtv and watch tv with mplayer. Thanks! I was about to pull my hair out.
Looks familiar. They're talking about Firewire, but the posted output from mythfrontend contains a lot of the same errors you're seeing. The tenth post down claims a fix, but who knows if that's what you really need to investigate. Worth a look however.
Then I went over to the MythTV mailing list archives at:
And pasted that same search string into their search box. Lots and lots of hits there. Four pages worth. I didn't read any of them, but you've got a starting place.
Google and MythTV mailing list archives are your friends! I used these HEAVILY when I was installing MythTV. It sure wasn't any one-day install for me, but I got it all done eventually. Works flawlessly now. BTW, I had to hack several files in ivtv source and one MySQL file in MythTV source before getting things to work. Also had to use gcc 3.3 rather than 4.0. Lots and lots of little gotcha's when installing MythTV. Be persistant!
