MySQL working without a network

I want to use MySQL on my PC,
I'm getting following err msg when I'm tring to start MySQL

Code:

ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)

Is there any way to use use MySQL on a single box?

This has nothing to do with being on a network.. what's the permissions of the sock file? How did you setup MySQL or was it already installed? How are you trying to start it? What do your logs tell you?

I'm using Gentoo..
So while I'm emerging KDE, It automatically installed MySQL..
I'm just tring to learn MySQL by refering to the a book (Mastering MySQL).
What I want to do is just to start MySQL & create some tables so on..
Pls Help Me!
