Question mySQL

I get the following when i try to bring up mySQL in redhat:

ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)


any suggestions?

1) is mysqld running?
2) Are there any errors in your mysql log file (it is usually in the database directory and is named *.err where * is the name of your computer.)?
