Music editor for Linux

Hello!

I'm looking for some kind of music editor on linux. Maybe something like Finale (or Sibelius/Cakewalk) - a program that can allow me to make printable scores, or, at least, to make playable multi-channel *.mid files (or render them into *.wav ). I'm NOT talking about "Cool Edit Pro" or "Sound Forge" analog.

What should I take a look at?

You could also try Ardour. Looks very nice.
But it did not work under Ubuntu when I tried it a time ago.

Thanks, but it looks like Ardour was designed more for digital music processing/editing, not for writing music scores. (I may be wrong, but I didn't find anything about scores in Ardour's description).

I suppose questions is closed. Thanks for the help.

Here's what I did:

Get Musixtex, Lilypond, and Noteedit. Rosegarden too, if you like, though I found it a bit harder to use. Noteedit is your GUI. It's very basic, doesn't have all the bells and whistles that Sibelius has, but it's very intuitive and easy. Then export the file into Lilypond (for traditional scores) or Musixtex (for anything non-standard). Lilypond will make absolutely beautiful scores, and can do midi output, while Musixtex gives you absolute control over everything. Unlike Sibelius and Finale, you can actually put anything anywhere in your score. It's fantastic.

Good luck.
