I never asked about other formats. (mpg, avi, etc...)
I don't think it matters because you have xv when root starts x,
but I just thought I'd mention it.
there is nothing in the man pages about this stuff anyway - i think he thought i didn't know how to do -vo vidix or -vo xv - i loathe people who don't read threads properly and just dive in...
which version of VL? i did a fresh install (as i said) and added the drivers but i neglected to check if it worked without so try that could you?
I'm lost. I did a fresh install of VL4.0, I didn't set up X myself but took
their automatic setup, added one user with no extra groups, installed MPlayer.
I got good accel but no xv.
Installed GATOS drivers by backing up /usr/X11R6, cd'ing to /usr and untaring
/home/foo/ATI-4.3.0-14.i386.tar.gz.
All is well. I get xv playback with any login.
I have however only tried this with .mov, .mpg, and .avi as I don't have DVD on
this machine.
fresh install for me with GATOS drivers was all go! xv for all users with any startx - i have x.org now tho cos i upgraded, that's where i am having teh probs - i could regress to xfree 4.3 but if it is working if i startx as root there must be some way to fix it!
er - dunno where that leaves us...

not to flame or anything...but if you look at the very bottom of the mplayer man pages it has an example section and in that example section is how to play dvds...(dont have it in front of me...) It gives you the exact command you need to use...and how to specify which drive the dvd is in...(note...no menus)
I prefer xine...but you have to install decss and the devel packages in order to play dvds...
I know this thread has gotten a bit hard to follow,
but I think the problem is that when using Xorg with
Vector 4.0 he cannot play DVD's using xv unless
X is started from a root login. Su'ing and starting a player from
a terminal is a not working either. (and shouldn't be necessary)
I can open certain non mpeg4 files with xv output... and I can load a good old divx file with -vo x11 BUT there's no fullscreen functionality with it...
i get this
Code:
[root@myhost james]# gmplayer -ao sdl -vo xv
