MPlayer two copies, linked volume?

I've copied mplayer to rplayer and use one for playing radio and one for MP3s. I'm now writing a script to automatically put the radio audio to 0 when the script finds a playlist, the playlist to play through mplayer, then the radio volume is returned. I'm doing this so there isn't a delay while rplayer reconnects to it's source.

However, when I dip the rplayer volume, through a pipe, mplayer is dipping it's volume as well, so I can't hear my MP3s. I'm guessing this is as I've just copied mplayer to rplayer and they are still connected at the back end. Does anyone know how I can get around this?

Thanks

I believe mplayers volume control just adjusts your soundcards mixer so no you can't run two instances at the same time with different volumes; unless each has it's own hardware output (like 2 soundcards or a multi-channel recording card.)

I was hoping that wasn't the answer I'm looking at using 'pause' but it's a bit messy. rplayer is then constantly buffering when the MP3s are playing.
