mplayer says it's playing the sound but nothing from speakers?

Have problems with lag between picture, first, and then sound latency on tv. Thought get round this with mplayer because you can change the audio/visual delay. But mplayer, although it says it is playing the sound, gives nothing out of the loudspeakers. Using sox does give the sound out of the loudspeakers but it has the said latency problem.

Anybody any thoughts about how to get the sound audible? aplay says the sound device is busy - so this might suggest mplayer is producing sound but it is muted or something.

Code:
mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:norm=PAL:input=0:amode=1:width=768:height=576:outfmt=yuy2:device=/dev/video0:chanlist=europe-west:alsa:adevice=hw.0:immediatemode=0 -key-fifo-size 2

inputs: 0 = Television; 1 = Composite1; 2 = Composite2; 3 = S-Video;
 Current input: 0
 Current format: BGR24
v4l2: current audio mode is : STEREO
