Unhappy Mplayer Dvd Question?

Hi...I'm just beginner of Linux..Can you please help me out...

I'm trying to install MPlayer 0.90-pre9...and this is my step of my compilation..please correct me if I am wrong:
(I've read manual installation and this is what I need to compiled,,)

1. I've downloaded binutils<<<<<tar xvjf, cd,./configure,make,make install<<succesfully
2.I've downloaded w32codec.tar.bz2 and this is what I've done:
-tar jxvf w32codec.tar.bz2
-cd w32codec
-./configure <<<<<<<< I can't use this command..why??? and How can I install w32codec.tar.bz2??

And in manual installation it says "Download and unzip w32codec.zip to /usr/lib/w32" <<<<How can I do this??

Thanks in advanced for your information and help

cd /usr/lib
mkdir win32
cd w32codecs
tar jxvf /home/angel/w32codec.tar.bz2

you probably won't really use those codecs if you do divx etc.. might be handy though.

well done for trying mplayer, it's easily the best around.

I've down loaded divx4linux-20020418.tgz How I can install it?
I've tried like this:

[root@localhost XBOXX]# tar xvzf divx4linux-20020418.tgz
divx4linux-20020418/
divx4linux-20020418/libdivxencore.so
divx4linux-20020418/libdivxdecore.so
divx4linux-20020418/decore.h
divx4linux-20020418/encore2.h
divx4linux-20020418/RELNOTES.linux
divx4linux-20020418/install.sh
divx4linux-20020418/DivX MPEG-4 Codec and Its Interface.pdf
divx4linux-20020418/license.txt
[root@localhost XBOXX]# cd divx4linux-20020418
[root@localhost divx4linux-20020418]# ./configure
bash: ./configure: No such file or directory

As you can see I typed ./configure but end up with No such file or directory

there is nothing to configure abuot the library, as it's just library routines, nothing is availble to change. you should still have a normal makefile though. you might want to install from rpm's though, it's a lot easier, and i'd guess your using redhat or mandrake, although you've not said....

if you are installing mplayer, then it actually comes with a different divx package, (libavcodec, part of the ffmpeg package) you can get teh divx4linux rpm's from rpmfind.net, but i'd try without it first, as it's less hassle. there are of course RPM's available for MPlayer too, BUT the pre9 version had a bug in it, it might have been fixed by now though. follow the links from the download page at http://mplayerhq.hu or try rpmfind.net again

how do you not know what the problem is when you say what it is in the previous sentence? you need to make a link to /dev/dvd to the ide device that is your dvd drive.

ln -s /dev/hdc /dev/dvd

where hdc is the dvd drive
