mp3 plug-in not responding in xmms

i'm using fedora core 2. i have xmms 1.2.10 installed and the mp3 plug-in is
enabled in preferences (or at least when i click on 'mpeg layer 1/2/3
placeholder plug-in' the little check-mark shows up in the enable box).

when i try to play an mp3 by choosing one from the 'play files' box nothing
happens. nothing is added to the playlist.

i can however get my cds to play just fine.

how do i know if i have the right plug-in? when i try using yum i get the following:

Code:
[root@localhost root]# yum install xmms-mp3
Gathering header information file(s) from server(s)
Server: Fedora Core 2 - i386 - Base
Server: Fedora Core 2 - i386 - Released Updates
Finding updated packages
Downloading needed headers
Cannot find a package matching xmms-mp3
No actions to take
[root@localhost root]#
i've tried going to the various sites suggested but i need step by step instructions for
finding downloading and installing any packages. i'm very new to linux. i go to a
site and see all the files and i have no idea what to do.

i'm not dumb...but i don't mind if you explain things to me like i am

i really appreciate all offered help.

try installing this xmms-mp3 and if that doesn't work/help/install look at rpmseek.com for more rpms.

After install, reply with results

you can download it to any folder, /home/*username* would probably be best for easy access reasons.

then open Konsole or whichever terminal you use, navigate to the folder the rpm is in, then type:
Code:
 rpm -Uvh $exact_name_of_package
where $exact_name_of_package is the exact name of the file (including the .rpm bit)

i downloaded "cd"ed to the right directory and installed.

it worked immediately.

thanks for the help. my biggest hangup was being unsure about the management of downloaded files. that and not knowning what the exact files to download were.

now i have the function i wanted. your help was excellent. thank you for the specificity.
