moving around in vim while in insert mode

I just installed VIM 6.3 and it's behaving strangely (to me). When I'm in "insert" mode, trying to move around using the arrow keys will put a letter on a new line. A for up, B for down, C for right, and D for left. I've been using older versions of vi without seeing anything like this. So how do I fix it so the arrow keys just move me around? Running Vector Linux 4.0 if that makes a difference.

additional problems. I'm also having trouble in general editing text. Sometimes it deletes, most the the time it won't. It seems to move in and out of INSERT on its own will. The same thing for Elvis, which can installed with vector.

anyone? nano seems to work fine, which confuses me even more. I really need vim to work because it's one of the reasons I even have linux on this laptop.

No idea, but apparently nobody else does either , so is it a case of different configs? If you had a ~/.vimrc you should still have a ~/.vimrc but maybe something went wrong. Or if you were using Vector's global vimrc, maybe it changed.

Or 6.3 is buggy.

Maybe.

(I have Vector, but I don't remember 3.2 and I've hardly touched 4.0, so I can't be of any specific help.)

A last shot in the dark is maybe vim's reading the wrong termcap/terminfo stuff. Can't really help with that, but it might be an area to search for more info.

What does 6.3 offer, btw? I hadn't even realized it was out. Any reason not to downgrade?
