moving a job between terminals

hi everybody,

i'm not at all a newbie, but this has been a mystery to me in the last 10 years, since no FAQ/tutorial/anything about UNIX CLI seems to talk about it.

so what i'd like to do, is start a job (e.g. wget stuff, which takes a long time) on tty1, background it, and foreground it on tty2. or start it on my server via ssh, background it, log out, and foregroud it when i log back in.

i know how to bg and fg stuff, but that only works while the shell is running.

is there a way?

thanks,
bamdad
