mouse freezes after sleep/xscreensaver lock/lid close/open

So....steps to reproduce:

xscreensaver -lock
close lid (I assume it sleeps at this point, not really sure never set it that way or I don't remember setting it up)
open lid
mouse is irresponsive

I can log in and navigate with the keyboard. The mouse cursor is there, but neither the red dot thinkpad button nor the trackpad will move the mouse cursor.

I'm using artix linux on a thinkpad T440s.

Not really sure where to start debugging this. I look at dmesg, but I don't see anything but this:

Code:
[ 14.028344] elogind[1870]: Watching system buttons on /dev/input/event3 (AT Translated Set 2 keyboard)
There was a line after that saying something broke, but I don't remember what it was. I can't copy/paste it without a mouse.

I don't see anything resembling a trackpad, mouse, or red dot in lsusb or lspci.

Code:
 lsusb

That's with the mouse working. I don't have any idea how to c/p without use of the middle click and just with the keyboard.

The first thing that I would, because it's easy, is test with another known-good mouse.

I have a few other thoughts:

All that xscreensaver -lock does is require a password to unlock the screen. It has nothing to do with sleep or suspend. Also, it's not safe to assume that closing the lid will put the machine to sleep. I have observed machines that, when the lid is closed, the OS is still running. If you want to suspend the machine, I think the best way to do so is from the menu or the command line.

You might want to take a deep dive into man xscreensaver. Here's a bit that looks like it might be relevant:

Code:
LAPTOP LIDS WITHOUT SYSTEMD
BSD systems or other systems without systemd(1) or elogind(8) might have luck by
adding "xscreensaver-command --suspend" to some appropriate spot in
/etc/acpi/events/anything or in /etc/acpi/handler.sh, if those files exist.
