modules loading [2.6.9]

hey guys.
i compiled 2.6.9 kernel but it doesnt load automatically psmouse module. So i need to run it manually to get my mouse working. how do i set it to be automatically loaded?
In the kernel config i enabled:
- Hotplug firmware loading
- Automatic kernel module loading

Also, when i try to run APM module it shows some error:
Code:
# modprobe apm
FATAL: Error inserting apm (/lib/modules/2.6.9/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/apm.ko): No such device
In the file /etc/modprobe.conf what should i write there to get some module to be loaded at boot time?

You don't specify what linux distribution you're using, so YMMV, but on many you can create/edit a file "/etc/modules" (note lack of .conf): this is simply a list of modules that you wish to be loaded at boot time.
