SuSe linux 9.1 kernel 2.6.4-54.3 on a intel p4

Got a big problem with modprobe... I ran SuSe update, and it gave me an uprgraded kernel. that's good and gravy, but unfortunately it forgot to tell modprobe where to look for new modules as shown by the failure of any moprobe inquiry:

# modprobe acm
FATAL: Module acm not found.

or on startup coldplug gives a similar error while trying to modprobe to hw_random saying 'no such device'

Also /var/log/messages gave a hint saying

modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.4-52-default/modules.dep: No such file or directory

that was the stock kernel version with SuSe 9.1, notice my new kernel number... HElp!

how do i tell the thing where to look for modules (ie the directory /lib/module/2.6.4-54.3-default)????

please help me... Thank you!

What's your 'uname -a' output?

I get a similar response from the update after an install of 9.1.

This is YaST Sound Card Module's [tentatively titled] output:

The update fetched 82801BA/BAM modules for my sound card, an Integrated Sound Blaster Compatible AC97 Sound, OptiPlex . How can I over-ride these modules with those on the install CD's?

#ls /lib/modules/2.6.4-54.5-default/kernel/sound/pci
AND

# lsmod | grep intel
Where to go from here?

By the way, Konqueror won't mount /media/cdrom!
