modprobe: Can't locate module tty-ldisc-3

Just upgraded to 2.4 kernel to install a modem driver, installed the modem driver, and am trying to test it out with wvdial. Wvdial connects to Earthlink, but immediately hangs up and tries to reconnect. Then it says to look at /var/log, so I looked at /var/log/messages, and found that there is an error "modprobe: can't locate module tty-ldisc-3" right before problems start to occur. How do I fix this problem?

Add in /etc/modules.conf
alias tty-ldisc-3 ppp_async
alias tty-ldisc-14 ppp_synctty
