Minimum latency for VNC to work

Hey,

I am trying to get a VNC connection working over VPN. It's not working, I connect the screen is white.

I think it could be related to the latency.

The latency between the two machines is between 1.5 and 8 seconds.

Is that too slow? Shouldn't it at least load the screen, just very slow?

Thanks,

David

Do you have a window manager starting in the vnc session?

Since it sounds like you may have limited bandwith you might want to check out FreeNX
http://freenx.berlios.de/

VNC can't even come close to the feature set and performance of FreeNX

Hmm,

After running iptraf I found that people were downloading pornographic videos, chatting on msn and streaming audio.

They aren't supposed to use the internet for non-work related things...

Heads are going to roll...

All that being stopped, latency dropped from 5 seconds to 90miliseconds....
