Ubuntu 8.04

How do I configure mailx to use my ISP's SMTP server? Also I have to enter a username/password.

Edit your /etc/mail/sendmail.mc file and put your ISP's SMTP server on this line.

define(`SMART_HOST', `smtp.comcast.net')dnl

Then run:
m4 /etc/mail/sendmail.mc > /etc/mail/sendmail.cf
service sendmail restart

Thanks but directory /etc/mail doesn't exist on my system. I tried sudo ls /etc/mail and it doesn't exist. Also sudo vi /etc/mail/sendmail.mc reveals a blank file I can't save.

Run the following command as root to find your sendmail.mc file. "find /etc -name sendmail.mc 2>/dev/null"

I issued that command and no results turned up. I also issued "sudo find / . -name sendmail.mc", nothing.

sendmail is in the path, I can issue the command "sendmail", I just get this comment:

"Exim is a Mail Transfer Agent. It is normally called by Mail User Agents,
not directly from a shell command line. Options and/or arguments control
what it does when called. For a list of options, see the Exim documentation.
"

If I man sendmail I get:

"NAME
exim4 - a Mail Transfer Agent

SYNOPSIS
exim4 [options] arguments ...
mailq [options] arguments ...
rsmtp [options] arguments ...
rmail [options] arguments ...
runq [options] arguments ...
newaliases [options] arguments ...
"

Does that mean I'm using exim and not sendmail? Or exim and not mailx? I'm confused.

Ahh, you're using exim. I'm not familiar with that program but I know you're configuration files are in /etc/exim.

I found this web link that shows running the config script "eximconfig" which gives you a couple of configuration options. I would recommend for you probably option 2 is what you want.

That's the extend of my exim knowledge. Sorry I wasn't able to help more.
