Low Bandwith, Low CPU, ... Software for VOIP, Video Conferencing ?

Hello,

Mumble is said to work on Low Bandwith, Low CPU, ... however it does not provide Desktop Sharing.
It works without graphics X11 or Wayland, i.e. with terminal only.
The old RPI3b can use mumble, very well.

There is jitsi but it does use too much CPU,,... and it requires a good hardware, especially like RPI5 or next gen of PIs.

Any other alternative software?

It should be too without login / without password. Alike mumble/pumble, set to the user to choose

Jitsi needs an account,... well Google is happy to monitor your passwords.

Teams or Zoom,... no no, we want opensource.

Kind regards

With due deference to your BSD sensibilities, your choice is
  1. Jitsi.

I'd advise a spare box for your less ethical moments when you actually need to get stuff done.

I suppose if one found a way to use a graphics card they could convert video without using cpu. I haven't looked at this much but the Rpi is terrible on transcoding I thought?

You could do worse that examine devices based on the RK3588 chip: 8 core Aem, decent frequency & Mali GPU. Slarm64 uses them for building.

I feel your pain on the quest for a low-key, open-source video conferencing gem. Have you checked out Acrobits? It's light on resources, has no login drama, and supports VOIP. I've run it smoothly on modest setups. It's worth a shot for your Pinebook Pro adventure!

Affirmative. They're promising a driver for the RPi 5 but they'll have to start from scratch. I guess they'll hire some poor guy and throw him in a corner as the "Linux Video development team." If he's hungry enough, we actually might get a driver someday.
