I have an Epson Stylus Photo R220 which I bought expressly because it can print on printable CDRs. On the Windows and Macintosh platforms, you can just use the PrintCD software that Epson ships with the printer.
I am not sure of the protocols or if there is any special driver or the like that you must have to make this work, but I am curious if there is software out there that can be modified to work with this printer. This is the only part of the software that I can not seem to find a Linux version.
If you have this printer and use this function on Linux, would like to know what you used to make your labels.
I am running Ubuntu Breezy 5.10 and plan to upgrade to Dapper when it gets released soon.
You're right that there isn't much in the way of cd label printing software at the moment. I've found it to be a pain myself. Your best option is to use the GIMP and the gutenprint plugin, which will let you output your image directly to the printer. As long as your printer driver supports the CD printer, then it should be able to print to it as well as to paper.
I think gutenprint will also provide driver support your printer, but if not, you can try the ones Epson provides itself through Avasys (though they can be very hard to compile): http://www.avasys.jp/english/linux_e/index.html
While we are on this, is there anything linux that will use the laser label burning software available on some drives and disks? This is where you compose a graphic and text, flip the disc over, and burn that image onto the back of the disc.
