Long log in time

I have an interesting problem, not urgently important but something I would like to figure out. Every time I log into my box as root through ssh or putty, it takes on average 10 seconds to login, However if I login using one of my normal user accounts, the login is instant. The same is true for FTP, anyone have any ideas what might be causing this...I am running slackware 10 CLI only, no gui.

One possibility is DNS lookups taking awhile. To test the theory you can temporarily specify UseDNS no in /etc/ssh/sshd_config (don't forget to restart or reload sshd afterwards).

hey, thanks for the suggestion. I didnt do exactly as you described but your statement about the DNS lookups helped me on the right track. I used the netconfig command and reseted everything and left the nameserver part blank, this resolved my issue and login now is instant, same with ftp
