location of grub.conf

I don't know what happened. I have been messin with grub.cong. All the sudden when I edit and reboot, grub doesn't refled the changes. EX: I had 4 entries and removed 2 of them. When I reboot all 4 are still there. I have been editing the file /etc/grub.conf. Does it ever start looking elsewhere for information? I don't understand.
