Local logon not working

Yesterday our server running Redhat Enterprise WS 3 suffered a powercut. On restart it is working OK except for the fact that I can't login from the local console using any username. When the username is typed in and the enter key pushed it just returns to the login prompt, and doesn't even go the the password prompt. However I can login using SSH and run a VNC session to x windows from another machine and everything else seems to be working normally. Any suggestions as to how I proceed to restore the local console login?

Have you tried tailing the log while attempting logon? If you can ssh from another machine, do a "tail -f" on /var/log/messages. Maybe you will spot something interesting there.

Thanks for the suggestion Danny. I tried it but nothing shows in the log. I think this is because on the local login the screen reverts to the login prompt after you put in the user name and press return, and never shows the password prompt. therefore you never actually complete adding in the login credentials.

If you know the whereabouts of the script that runs the login sequence producing the prompts and collecting the responses then I think that this is where I will have to look for an answer.
