Linux text mode

Red Hat 9 - new user

If you are running Linux in text mode (console only), then is there a command line utility that will allow you to lock the screen? If so, what is it, and what type of screen saver does it use (can you choose?)?

FreeBSD has a "lock" command that I liked when I used it, but I don't know if it's available for GNU/Linux.
