I have an old pII 300mhz with 128mb ram and like 5gig hdd space that is obviously old crappy and not in use
i want to setup a webserver for my lan basically for kicks and for the learning experience, might as well use this old thing for as long as i can before its completely extinct :P
php, apache and mysql will be run on it
anyways, the question is which linux os would be best to run on this old comp? based on performance and suitibility for a webserver. not only the distro but the version number as obviously new versions wont run on it very well
what version of redhat is good for this old of hardware/webserver function?
what version of suse is good for this old of hardware/webserver function?
any others that should be considered?
is there a table of popular distro's system requirements anywhere?
this will be a private server (on my lan) so security isnt an issue
i have only used redhat before, so im not a complete noob :P, but im not sure whats out there, can you guys help?
well really if you want the best i would go with one of the latest versions of BSD
P2 300mhz isn't that slow and any modern distro i would think would work well
no need for x for any of the uses you seem to want it for you could run it on a 16mhz 386
you could use Slackware.... Appache works wonderfully with it. I sometimes have Appache load up when I boot up my box, just for kicks and giggles. And Slack is easy to use without X. Lynx does wonders, especially for popup control
