Line number in Emacs as default

Hi all
How can I make Emacs to show the line numbers at the left or right. This might help me to quickly jump to a given line.
Thanks
SS

Hi.

Have a look at this:

http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?LineNumbers

but don't ask how to use it. I have no idea.

If you want something simpler, you can get emacs to display the current line number on the mode line by putting:

line-number-mode 1

into your ~/.emacs file.
