Kismet troubles

Hi all, quick question. I configured kismet to work with my Alfa AWUS036H USB wireless card with these configurations...

Code:
source=rt8180,wlan0,ALFA
Kismet starts up fine, but it doesn't detect any APs. Does anyone know what might be the problem? I've got it to work when I ran Linux as a host machine. But now it's running in a VM. But I hardly think that could be the problem because I let the VM take control of the card. Any suggestions? Thanx in advance.

You only started this thread 12Hrs before you posted to your own thread to "bump" it.

This was not a "good idea" because:

1] This thread is now off the "Zero Replies" list, which many LQ users monitor, and actively try to provide answers to.

2] LQ will "Auto-bump" your thread to the top of the forum list if it has had no reply for > 24Hrs.
LQ will do this for three days.
This isn't going to happen now

3] Answers are provided by volunteers. We are not a "Support Service" that you have paid for. We don't like being reminded that we have not had the time to research or answer your question. As individuals, we may not understand or even be interested in your problem.

Please be patient.

It identifies networks by passively collecting packets and detecting standard named networks, detecting (and given time, decloaking) hidden networks, and inferring the presence of non-beaconing networks via data traffic.
So, either you need to use kismet as "an intrusion detection system", in which case you should know how to use and configure it, or you'd like to use it for some other purpose, which we are unlikely to help you with until you explain your position and needs better.

Also, I suspect many LQ users may "move on" when they read you are running a VM [ too many complications, when you do not explain your VM ].

Good luck in having your Q answered

One of the many things I hate when asking for assistance is when people tend to write almost two pages of useless information having nothing to do with my problem.

For those who are willing to offer some useful advice I'll be a bit more direct.
I'm using Debian in a VirtualBox environment, I have kismet installed and I'm trying to get it to work. I have all my configurations setup properly and I don't know why the program will start but no signals are detected. This is a pretty simple program to get running because I've done just that when I had Debian installed on my HD. But now since I have it running in VirtualBox it doesn't seem to want to function properly. I'll keep playing around with it and eventually get it working, but if anyone would like to offer some suggestions opposite of the above I'd appreciate it. Thanx.

One of the whole points of using a VM is that the guest is isolated from the real hardware. The guest usually only sees the virtual ethernet card, which almost certainly doesn't have wireless capabilities.

Actually tredegar's post was very much related to your problem. He was spot on in pointing out that bumping your own thread was self-destructive and had some specific questions that you neglected to answer. A number of people who frequent this forum have a real problem with kismet and the like because it can be used for highly destructive purposes.

I didn't fail to mention that the wireless card was USB. And I always let the guest take control of that particular USB device. The guest can see other wireless with networkmanager and connect. It's just the kismet program I was having troubles with, but I've resolved them like I said I would.
