kernel panic when loading live cd - is it a hard disk problem?
Hi all,
Before I installed debian with partitions:
/dev/hda1 /boot ext2
/dev/hda2 swap
/dev/hda3 root ext3
and it also started having problem during boot with error of kernel-panic.
I've tried to load debian net install disk.
But at the very beginning of boot, computers freezes with message:
Booting the kernel.
[ 1.111834] RAMDISK: incomplete write (-28 != 32768) 8388608
[ 1.160938] crc error
[ 1.176723] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on uknown-block(104,3)
Is it a hard disk problem?
When I tried to load gentoo live disk. I got the error:
No file system could mount root, tried reiserfs and so on...
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on uknown-block(1,0)
With booting a Live/bootable CD, it shouldn't be a hard drive problem as you can boot a Live CD without a hard drive. I would try a different CD drive, check the RAM with Memtest and then try a few more Live CDs before giving up and throwing the thing away.
It could be a number of things. But it mainly looks like something is corrupted, it maybe you have faulty ram and the ramdisk that is trying to be created has failed, if this fails then there is no where for the kernels initrd.gz to be extracted to, this can happen with older ram.
It could be a faulty cd-r/dvd-r that was burned, not uncommon to have a few blank discs fail. It could be a faulty cd/dvd drive or the iso that you downloaded could be corrupted.
But interesting thing is that, I have already installed debian on that pc.
It was running for 2 days, and "kernel-panic" problem occured. So maybe this is not a cd/dvd-r problem..
Maybe this is a problem of the ram memory... I have 2 256MB memory.
I took away 1 256M ram memory and now I don't have kernel-panic problem.
Thanks.
Good to hear you were able to isolate the probem, bad ram. Just out of curiosity, are they the same brand of ram? two different brands of ram can cause issues, I have had different ram that have had problems running in the same computer, yet put them in two different computers and they run fine.

Hi! Sorry for late response.
Actualy the problem occured in the office I worked before. Now I'm not there so I can't tell you exactly what are the brands of the RAMs.
But I know that there were bought separately, so there's hi possiblity that their brands are different.
