kernel conflicts...why netfilter...why?

When compiling my brand spankin' knew 2.4.18 kernel, I get a wonderful build. Until I try running iptables --list (or any other option to it for that matter).

The problem is that netfilter.o et al are not being loaded by the kernel. ip_tables.o has unresolved dependancy issues with nf_unregister_sockopt(...) and nf_register_sockopt(...)

If I put the netfilter.o et al suite into the kernel library area, I know it won't work because they're not compiled as lkm's. Everything under the kernel config was selected as a module. Did I goof up?

Could you explain? How have you compiled your kernel (which commands)?

ok, I did a make menuconfig to configure the kernel. I set CONFIG_NETFILTER to y, and all of the CONFIG_IP_NF_foo to m. Then I proceeded with a make dep && make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install, then copied the resulting bzImage to /boot and updated my /etc/lilo.conf to reflect that kernel. Kernel version: 2.4.18
modutils version: 2.4.15
netfilter version: 1.2.7a

thanks,

I guess depmod may be a good idea...

what do you mean? I've run depmod and it just reports that nf_unregister_sockopt and nf_register_sockopt (both of which are in netfilter.o) cannot be found. I can't put netfilter.o into the /lib/modules/2.4.18/... directory because they're not modules (no kernel version information...apparently they're not modules ???). I was wondering if anyone had this problem before and what the solution was?
