Unhappy kernel compilation help

i compiled a new kernel (2.4.x) and everything went smoothly...after compilation, i configured grub and rebooted my computer with the new kernel, my problem is that, the new kernel stops booting and just freezes...what could be the problem...i'm thinking that maybe i configured it wrong using make xconfig...can anyone give me a working configuration or some pointers to look after so that it will work properly... thanx

how long did you wait after this.

Sometimes on first boot things take a bit longer.

Go make a snack and wait 10 minutes to see what happens while it boots

Try that first, no use recompiling if its just a long span of no output on first boot!

i think the longest that i waited for it was between 5-10mins, i think about 8mins...then i kinda got bored with it...hehehe...actually, the only reason im recompiling the kernel is that i have a piece of software that has its own server component which was compiled using gcc version 2 and the kernel that i used on it was compiled using gcc version 3...it said that it was known not to work.
