Kernel Compilation Documentation

Hi. I wanted to try downloading/compiling a new kernel for my SuSE 9.1 Pro. Is there any sites that just have generic guides for doing this, not based on a different distro??? Even kernel.org doesn't point to any good howtos? And should I backup my system before doing this or is it easy to revert to my old kernel?
