Kernel 2.4.26 / xfsprogs 2.6.x - Catch 22

Somewhat of a newbie sorry.

Running RH 9, I want to upgrade the Kernel to 2.4.26. Kernel 'Changes' file says to upgrade to xfsprogs 2.6.0 minimum.

SO trying to install xfsprogs and it complains about needing /usr/include/uuid/uuid.h.

So I found and installed the uuid package under its defaults, based on what it says. (And because I didn't know what else I'd screw up by playing with it.) Anyway the install puts uuid.h in /usr/local/include, so xfsprogs can't seem to find it. I've tried copying it into where xfs wants it. I;ve tried creating a symlink to simulate /usr/local/include as /usr/include/uuid, but still no joy. I even tried editing the xfsprogs.spec file, but it STILL doesn't work. It still complains about having to have uuid.h in /usr/include/uuid/ and consequently does not install.

I've been trying for a week now to get this bloody machine running and I'm tired.

And after this I still have to figure out how to get the Speedtouch modem runnning under PPPoE, but that's another week of no sleep I fear.

If someone can tell me how to get around this please, I would be very grateful.
