kde 3.2 crashes on logout

I have seen questions similar to this, though none of them seemed to answer my problem: most, but not all, of the times when I attempt to log out of KDE, the screen goes blank, with just the mouse cursor, then the whole system freezes, the only way out is to use the hardware reset. I have tried using both KDM and GDM, but this seems to make little difference. I am running XFree-4.3.07 on a Debian Unstable system. The hardware I am using is:

*Intel P3 1GHz
*SiS 630 on board graphics chip etc.
*TFT laptop monitor.

It took me three attempts to install debian, because I couldn't find a kernel version which supported my graphics and sound stuff, and the networking I needed. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. (P.S. I apologise if this is in the wrong section, it was the closest match to the problem I could think of)
