kate terminal not showing up

I'm running Ubuntu Dapper Drake, and I've just installed the kate editor. The thing is that I can't seem to get the terminal tab to work. The tab just shrinks my programing window as if to reveal the terminal, but no terminal appears, just the gray backdrop of the application. Any thoughts? I'll send a screenshot when I can

When you click on the terminal icon, move your mouse just above the terminal icon until it changes from an arrow to something similar to a plus sign, then drag the window upwards to reveal the terminal.

I've done that, hence me describing the gray backdrop. When I've used kate on other machines, the terminal has taken up that gray space.

is Konsole installed?
