JDK 1.4 isn't open source.

version (1.)6 is: https://jdk6.dev.java.net/ http://openjdk.java.net/

Runtime source code has always been available since Java 1.0. Look for a file named "src.zip" in your JDK installation directory.

compiling java runtime on Linux has always been a rather strange and dificult experience.
look on http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/hints/ there used to be some off the wall instructions in there somewhere.

Why would you want to compile when Sun offers binaries as well?

well three things come to mind.

first if yu can compile it you can change it (freedom)
second is for speed.
third is for some purist ideological reason.
