Java applets incredibly slow

I have Fedora 12 with its default installation of openJDK, and Java applets go very, very, very slow (something like 2-3 FPS!). I thought that the lack of a graphics driver was the cause, but it didn't help.

How should I fix this?

I remember that Java applets were slow in Debian (openJDK), but in Slackware they were fast but slightly glitchy (JRE for Linux), and middle-button-paste did not work.

I followed the instructions here for 64-bit RPM:

http://www.java.com/en/download/help/5000011300.xml

and Firefox still uses openJDK.

Then maybe fix the links (see about:plugins in FF), or remove openJDK and then reinstall Sun's version.

I have never used java other than Sun's (32-bit). It works.

64-bit may be awkward, I'm still on 32-bit (everything runs fine).

HTH.

Well, I'm a debian-based-distro person, so yum means nothing to me. apt-get ... works well though (but it's Debian, so will not apply to your installation).

I'm sure you'll find a way.

man yum ?

Do you mean "yum install galternatives" and that's it?

Yes but that is not all there is to it. You'll need to launch galternatives (probably shown as "alternatives editor" in one of the menus) and manually switch the various java entries to point to the sun java binaries.

Does fedora provide the java-config command? On some distribution, this command is used to set the default java-virtual machine. And Yes, openJDK is many times slower than sunJdk
