So I'm getting a little closer (I think). I was able to get the sdk installed (I found another file on Sun's site). My problem occurs when I try to compile a java file. I type "javac filename.java" and it says "command not found." I am trying to run this from the directory where I ran the rpm file to install the sdk.

Doing a "locate javac" produces no results.
Trying to re-run the rpm file says it's already installed.
The new file I ran is j2sdk-1_4_2_03-linux-i586.rpm
The "problem" is that the rpm doesn't set-up
your environment.

Try to put something like

Code:
#!/bin/sh
# Add JDK1.3 specific settings
export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/java/bin:/usr/java/jre/bin
into
/etc/profile.d/java.sh
and make it
chmod ugo+x,go-w /etc/profile.d/java.sh

Cheers,
Tink

see if it was installed in /opt

if so, add the following to your .bash_profile

JAVA_HOME=/opt/j2sdk_nb/j2sdk1.4.2
export JAVA_HOME

also look in /usr/local

if you installed netbeans, the run command would be

/opt/j2sdk_nb/netbeans3.5.1/bin/runide.sh

Greetings

I have mandrake 9.2 and have downloaded the jdk with netbeans because I need it for a class, my problem is where to install it....by default it wants to go to /root but is that a good thing? It does this when I install it as su...should I do the whole chmod 755 thing to the bun file and install it as user? thanks for any help
