hello! I currently use linux mandrake and I am interesting in Debian, so please tell me if it is possible and how to have both distributions installed in the same computer?
Thank you
this has been asked many many many times here..please use the search page to find your answer(s)....basically, just install one, install another and if you wish, set the same /home partition for both distros, don't format anything when installing the 2nd distro, and only install bootloader once, and configure it afterwards to use both distros.
Yup, but you'll have to read up and be prepared e.g. bootdisks, backups of your /boot/grub/menu.lst and others. Know all your settings.
Well, I suggest you get the net installer for debian testing or sarge. Or better yet, wait for sarge to become debian 3.1. (stable) Probably soon. I'm waiting for it too.
thank you for the answers. I have a debian iso in a CD Rom (it came with a linux magazine). but as it seems to me my distro does not recognize the .dbn format, or at least I don'y know how to procede. thanks
You probably got a stable release, probably woody 3.0 or if its new, then it might be sarge. Anyway try booting using the cd. Look at the version but don't install yet if you aren't ready. You need to give it a separate partition plus if you let it install GRUB, it might not recognize your mandrake automatically, meaning you have to reedit /boot/grub/menu.lst in debian.
If you can afford to refomat your drive. I'd suggest making a separate
/swap - shared by the 2
/boot - shared (you have to be careful with the names or location of your kernels)
and a separate /home partition one for each distro
and of course separate / partitions
