i have 280 gb hard disk.i have 2 parttiosion.

i want to install centos in E: drive by creating new partision of 10 gb.
and i wnt to install it by graphical mode & also create driver of /,/boot,home ,user,etc in that.
so plz help me in installation....

Inside the extended partition, use your widows xp to create a 10 gig logical partition at the end of the extended partition. Just create the partition but do not format that partition.

When you install Centos, select that 10 gig partition for installation of Centos. Let Centos format the partition for the filesystem type you want to use (ext2, ext3, ext4, or some other). Then install the entire Centos in that partition.

Before you install Centos, you must decide whether you want Centos to write the first stage of grub bootloader to the MBR (master boot record) of the hard drive (and show you a boot menu in which you choose xp or Centos to boot), or if you want the xp bootloader to show a boot menu in which you choose xp or Centos to boot (keeping the xp bootloader in the MBR).

If you choose to let the Centos installation of grub take over the MBR, then do yourself a favor and make a copy of the MBR as it is BEFORE you install Centos. If things don't work out as you expect, you can write the copy of the MBR back to the MBR before deleting Centos, and still be able to boot xp. The Centos installation should write a bootloader configuration which will show you both windows and Centos in the boot menu when you boot up.

If you choose to use the xp bootloader to show a boot menu in which you can choose Centos, then, during installation of Centos, you must be careful to tell Centos to install the grub bootloader to the root partition of Centos, and not to the MBR.

In that case, you will not be able to boot Centos until you configure the xp bootloader to make it possible to boot Centos.

I don't use windows, so I can't tell you how to configure the xp bootloader. A little searching via google should turn up instructions on how to do that.

Cent5.6 is THE ONLY supported version of the 5 series
and CEntOS 6.0 is current

for a dual boot with XP i have found, over the years , that it is better to leave the MBR alone and let xp have it
do some googling there are two main ways with xp
I USE
the "dd" way and add a line to Windows XP "boot.ini"

10 gig ??? a bit small but doable .9 gig is the recommended VERY SMALLEST size

i would use 20 to 25 gig if you have the space

read the instructions first
then
ask questions on points that you do not understand

Also keep in mind that RHEL/CentOS/SL
were DESIGNED for a server with NO GUI !
and as such do NOT work well on a home system
by default there is NO music support (for most formats)
by default there is NO Video support (for most formats)
by default there is NO video player installed ( maybe totem ) but NO codecs to play videos .
mp3 IS NOT supported by default .
