Installing software with Setup file

Again, this is probably because I am a Windows refugee in Linux land...

I have a package on CD that has a Setup file, which is a binary/executable file. I want to use this, rather than run the rpm files because I suspect this will install everything, not just a piece at a time. The choices are Save and Open this file. The Open really doesn't give me any obvious options as to what to use. How can I install this application suite with this executable?

Is it a Windows "*.exe" file?

What is the filename?

Well my question would be what program is this? This setup file you see could be a plain text file that explains how to install the program...

i really wouldn't run an executable unless you ultimately trust it, or you know exactly what it's doing, but tha'ts just me.

open it in a text editor, if it's readable, and the first line begins with #!, then a file, make sure you have that interpreter, and the path is correct, then it'll run

if it's not readable, but the first few chars are ELF, or possibly OUT, then it's a linux executable, and it'll run

to execute it, chmod o+x it, then type ./filename
