I have purchased a new printer, a Canon MX320 incorporating a printer, a scanner, a copier and fax. I am using Mandriva 2010 32 bit. The fax and copier are not part of the problem and neither is the printing side, I managed to source a driver for the printer and scanner from the Canon site. They are tar.gz files and the both extracted to their own folder. The printer software installed and the printer works fine, the scanner software installed,(I checked the package stats) but sane tells me no scanner installed. I have an HP scanner also installed and Sane picks it up, no problem. Is this the problem, do I have to uninstall all the HP software? Or is it in the config?

Reason: Solved
Yes, that's where I got them, but I wouldn't know where to start with regard to compiling, I've only just started with Linux. Are there any tutorials on this?
You might wait before trying to compile anything. Exactly what error messages did you receive when tried to use the scanner?
This machine is not listed on the supported list on the sane site, but the MX 300 and the MX 310 use the sane-pixma back end. I assume that you are using the HPLIP driver for your HP, and that it has installed a version of sane.
Can you find any other copies of sane installed on your system, assuming that the Canon linux driver would install one? It is also possible that the Canon driver does not use it.
You can look at these to see if they help. Google told me little about the MX 320 or the Canon linux drivers.
I have seen some printer/scanner combos where the scanner doesn't show up until you have pressed the scan button on the printer. Then linux can find and use it.
Thanks to all for your help and interest, your suggestions got me on the right track, the printer and scanner are now working, and I've learned a lot, much appreciated.

Please post the details of your distro, and what you did to make it work.
Because, presumably, you originally came here because it would not work.
Now (several posters) have offered advice, and some of it must have worked, and someone else will be searching for the answer.
They'll end up at this thread and reach

But what, exactly did you do for your (specify) hardware and (specify) distro?
We helped you, so make the time to give a little back to the linux community here and please and post your (short but concise) HOWTO here.
I found this thread trying to solve the same issue but unfortunately the original author has ignored to post the solution he found. How lame.
I have installed the scangearmp and canon ij printer drivers from Canon available here: support-th.canon-asia.com/P/search?model=PIXMA+MX328&menu=download&filter=0&tagname=ca_os&ca_os=Linux
Drivers are available in RPM, DEB and also as source files. So after installing them, I found that the printer works automatically but not the scanner. To use the scanner, it seems you need to run the command: scangearmp from the terminal and you get the scanner software you can use to scan.
