installing FC2, don't know what to do with swap partition in disk druid

ok.. i have only used linux once.. but i am installing it now..

i have the following config
800 mhz celeron
384 mb ram
3, 4 gig hard drives;
1 has win2000
1 has files on it
1 is ready to be formatted for linux

so i am in disk druid... and i see there are ext3 partitions and swap...

it says i don't need a swap partition, but i really should use it...

so, how big do i make it, do i put it on the same physical drive, do i put it at the beginning or end of the drive.. etc..

ok.. i am looing more... it defaults to 100 mb... is that fine? or do i want more than that? should it be a percentage of the total HD space? or should it be 100 mb in most cases?

thanks

scott

swap is always recommended,
size depends on how much partition size u have though.....thumbrule is 2x(memory size)

mount point....in disk druid there must be an explicit option where u can select swap and that should be it...no need of any other info...

also, u can have it anywhere but preferrably later (as u may like to alot remaining space to it (memory size) < swap size < 2x(memory size)

hope it helps,

so i have 384 mb or ram.. i should do 760 mb for swap? hmm.. damn.. i only have a 4 gig... and fc2 takes 4 cds... won't that cut it really close?? i can scrounge up a whole 4 gig to use for swap... or is that wasteful? after i figure this out, i am going to make a server on another computer... but 1 thing at a time...

right now i am looking at 3349 mb ext3 and 760mb swap at the end of the drive...

does this sound right

the mount point is " / " is that right? why would you make it " /boot " or somethign like that for example?

i am impatient.. i just went ahead and did it... if an OS takes up 3 gigs then i don't want to even use it...

(as i click in my computer to see how much space my XP installation takes up)

well open office takes up 500 mb and i dind't realize that was included...

i am learnign as i go i guess...

scott0482,

As for the swap size....swap is working like the ram... you create a swap partition to support your ram when you process big ammounts of data, so data is written temporarily to the hard disk.
So, big swap partition is needed in systems with low ram. In your case an 200mb of swap memmory should work fine.
I suggest not to spend more than 200mb on your swap memmory , it's not worth it .

cheers
