Installing a new distro over ore moving existing and start over

A 'knowledgeable friend' managed to install SL (simple Linux) on my machine.
This has proved be very difficult to use because of its tiny style and me having impaired vision.

So I need to get back to Ubuntu.

Whilst I have several magazine disks, they are designed to run from a Windows platform-so do not seem to 'fireup' from within Linux .
I have also downloaded various ISO's and burned them all to no avail so far.
Your thoughts much appreciated.

You don't (with some odd exceptions that aren't relevant here) install Linux from within another operating system. You tell your machine's BIOS to boot from the CD/DVD drive first, put in the install disc, then boot into either the installer or live environment. See here for details:

It might help if you were a bit more forthcoming about the problems of using a bootable DVD. What exactly was the problem?
