Question Install mplayer on Centos 6.0 64bit?

Hello all,

How can I install mplayer on a centos 6.0 64bit. I can install it on a centos 5.7 32bit using instruction from this page http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/MultimediaOnCentOS but when I tried this page for centos 6.0 I encounter problem. Does anyone know install mplayer?

Thank you all.

Hello,

1- I created a dag file like below;

vi /etc/yum.repos.d/dag.repo
and add this text and saved it;
[dag]
name=DAG RPM Repository
baseurl=http://apt.sw.be/redhat/el$releasever/en/$basearch/dag
gpgcheck=1
enabled=1

For instance from this page http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/MultimediaOnCentOS. Here is the message I get

[root@server1 ~]# yum install libdvdcss libdvdplay libdvdnav lsdvd
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, presto, refresh-packagekit

You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest

When I ran this command rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest the system did not do anything and I don't find anything about this and how to install it libdvdread.so.3()(64bit)

And how do I undo this command from this page http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalRes...0ae92d1398e01;

rpm --import http://apt.sw.be/RPM-GPG-KEY.dag.txt

there is a conflict
i my self do not install mplayer on RHEL it is way to easy to 100% mess up the install trying to get the EXPERIMENTAL DVD to work in mplayer

for that use VLC

however you might want to set up yum-protectbase and yum-priorities

that way you will not FUBAR the install trying to get the multimedia to work on ( cent/RHEL/SL )

but if you want to mess around with mplayer on Cent

do not install the dvd part .Leave out " libdvdcss libdvdread libdvdplay libdvdnav lsdvd"

Also why did you manually make a "dag" file"dag" is no more it rolled into rpmforge

you should have installed the rpmforge repo rpm
in firefox click on the below link and select "install"
http://packages.sw.be/rpmforge-relea....rf.x86_64.rpm

Hi, I had too much problem and I had to re-install Centos OS again. This time I installed Centos 6.2 64bit fresh. I installed mplayer using instructions from here http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/MultimediaOnCentOS. Now I have sound but no video display. Have I missed something? Thank you.

Hi

No. I installed the 2006 codecs.

wget www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/mplayer-codecs-20061022-1.x86_64.rpm
rpm -ivh mplayer-codecs-20061022-1.x86_64.rpm
wget www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/mplayer-codecs-extra-20061022-1.x86_64.rpm
rpm -ivh mplayer-codecs-extra-20061022-1.x86_64.rpm

Should I install this(all-20110131.tar.bz2)instead?

Hi,

The reason I installed the 2006 because it gives me .rpm extension and it was easy to install (rpm -ivh mplayer-codecs-20061022-1.x86_64.rpm). To be honest, I don't even know what this command does rpm -ivh mplayer-codecs-20061022-1.x86_64.rpm? Does it unpack the codecs source files, copy and paste them somewhere? If yes in which directory? This file has .bz2 extension and I don't know how to install it (all-20110131.tar.bz2). Do I have to unzip it and put the codecs files in a directory or I should better ask to which directory? Thank you

I am assuming you fallowed the very old instructions for Cent5 on cent6
http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/MultimediaOnCentOS

you must update them for cent6.1

for a look at the changes have a look at the fedora 16 guide
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mj...l#mediaplayers

fedora is close to RHEL6 and CentOS6 , newer but close .
the packages are very close in the names

just keep in mind the repo WARNINGS in the cent wiki
http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories
for 6 the rpmforge-extras is incompatible with the red hat upstream
and if used there might be file conflicts

install and configure the yum plugin "Priorities"

as to the tar bz file there is in it a text file called README
with the instructions
copy the files to /usr/lib/codec ( or if set up on your cent install /usr/local/codec )

Hi,

Here is the content of the /etc/yum.repos.d folder.

[root@server1 yum.repos.d]# ls
CentOS-Base.repo CentOS-CR.repo CentOS-Debuginfo.repo CentOS-Media.repo

I tried to do these command from here, http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mj...a-f16.html#yum but the system gives me error message.

Third Party Repositories

For applications that are against Fedora policies (MP3, DVD, MPEG, Binary Drivers, etc), a third party repository should be used. The recommended repository for Fedora is: RPMFusion. For the purpose of this guide, (most) all needs are met by the RPMFusion repository, other requirements are stated.

To set up the RPMFusion repositories:

[mirandam@charon ~]$ sudo rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/...ble.noarch.rpm

[mirandam@charon ~]$ sudo rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfr...ble.noarch.rpm

[root@server1 tmp]# rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfr...ble.noarch.rpm
Retrieving http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfr...ble.noarch.rpm
warning: /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.CifB3D: Header V3 RSA/SHA256 Signature, key ID f09d8368: NOKEY
error: Failed dependencies:
rpmfusion-free-release >= 14 is needed by rpmfusion-nonfree-release-14-2.noarch
system-release >= 14 is needed by rpmfusion-nonfree-release-14-2.noarch

[root@server1 tmp]# rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/...ble.noarch.rpm

you are trying to install a rpm for a different OS . That will not work
you can not mix fedora with red hat ( or cent)

REMOVE ALL AND EVERY file you installed for fedora
And do not blindly just do things, read about it first and use your head ( think first)
this is not brain surgery BUT you DO have to THINK ( use what you have)

Personally i do not install multimedia programs on RHEL
it is meant for the office or server ,and is not a good home system
However once you have navigated the minefield ( yes it is one) and have the multimedia installed AND NOT IN CONFLICT with the rest of the OS
it is stable. Just that it is a royal pain to set up in the first place and NOT kill the install .

install the rpmforge and cent-extras repos
then install and configure yum-Priorities plugin VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!
then search you for the packages
they are in the rpmforge repo

just use the fedora documentation as a " loose guide" for finding what is needed for Cent 6

Hi John,

Thank you for your response. Actually, I am trying to install mplayer on a Centos 6.2 Server. The php web scripts requires mplayer, ffmpeg, flvtool2, libogg, libvorbis and mencoder to be installed on the server. I have managed so far to install all of them except the mplayer is a pain. I have installed mplayer mplayer-gui, mplayer-fonts and mplayer-skins already. I untar this all-20110131.tar.bz2 file and put the codecs files in /usr/lib/codecs folder. One thing I noticed that it actually plays MP4 Video (.mp4) file both audio and video but for .wmv file it just plays audio but no video.

for SOME .wmv files they are broken on the 64 bit OS
some but not all and cent / rhel is NOT the only OS's affected

i convert those on a 32 bit os to mp4's and then move them to my 64 bit main OS
