I don't know how Buntu repos work but maybe you need to add some to your sources.list file. Anyway you can grab a copy here: http://packages.debian.org/sid/gimmie
and install it with
Code:
dpkg -i {name of gimmie deb file}
which you run as root or use sudo. If it doesn't work you can always remove it.
Cheers,
jdk

This installs gimmie, which I already have
I am after getting the gimmiescreenlet working, I have it installed now but when I try and launch it with the screenlet manager, nothing happens. I know gimmie is working fine as I have launched it several times with no issues.
You've lost me completely. What program are you trying to run?
jdk
Sorry this is my fault entirely as I have gone off at a tangent.
I opened this thread asking for help compiling 'gimmie'. I did not however reveal my reason for wanting 'gimmie'. I was looking to run the 'gimmiescreenlet' which is a separate entity which depends on the main 'gimmie' app to work. I got the main 'gimmie' app compiled and working with a little guidance from your good self, but I cannot get the screenlet to function. I am now giving up on it as I have found that the main 'gimmie' app can run as an applet in my gnome panel negating the need for a screenlet.
Thankyou for your patience and sticking with the thread, all too often people bail on me half way through as I can be a pain in the butt! I know some stuff about most things but little about any one thing in particular - I am the generalist.
With your encouragment I have, however, learned enough about compiling from source to no longer be scared of it! Thankyou again
My pleasure. glad to have been of some service. The gimmiescreenlet seems to be a python program and you don't appear to have python installed. Maybe you should
1. install python and
2. run

I did try this the other day, but to no avail. Anyway, now I have a fully functioning gimmie panel applet the screenlet is not really of interest anymore!!
I am sure I have got python, I even installed a s#1t load of python dev packages in my efforts to beat this screenlet into submission!, what makes you say I don't? I'd love to know so I can further improve my own diagnostic skills!!
